North East Dementia Care
Our Story
From personal journey to community support
North East Dementia Care is a Charity Incorporated Organisation founded in 2019 by Sandra Falkner.
Sandra’s journey began when her husband, Billy, was diagnosed with early-onset dementia in his 50s. During this incredibly difficult time, Sandra found vital support at Alzheimer’s Society’s Day Care Centre in Sunderland, which became a lifeline for both Billy and Sandra as his primary carer.
The centre provided Billy with meaningful stimulation, care, and companionship, while giving Sandra much-needed respite and reassurance. Even after becoming familiar with the challenges of dementia, Sandra remained closely connected to the centre, supporting others who were facing similar journeys.
Driven by gratitude and determination, Sandra made a promise to do everything she could to ensure that people living with dementia on Wearside would always have access to compassionate, local support. Through dedication, resilience, and hard work, North East Dementia Care was established to continue that mission.
Sadly, Billy passed away in 2015 at the age of 67. His legacy lives on through the charity, which continues to provide the same lifeline of care, understanding, and community that once supported Sandra and Billy.

"North East Dementia Care gave us support when we needed it most."
Meet the Team
Dedicated professionals making a difference
At North East Dementia Care, our team is at the heart of everything we do. United by compassion, experience, and a shared commitment to improving the lives of people living with dementia, we work together to create a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment for our members and their families.
Founded by Sandra Falkner, the charity was built on lived experience, understanding, and a deep determination to ensure that no one in Sunderland faces dementia alone. That same ethos continues to guide our team today.
Our staff and volunteers bring a wealth of knowledge, empathy, and dedication to their roles. Many have personal experience of caring for loved ones with dementia, which shapes the way we deliver our services, with patience, dignity, and respect at the forefront.
From activity coordinators to support workers and volunteers, every member of our team plays a vital role in creating meaningful days filled with stimulation, companionship, and reassurance. We believe in seeing the person, not the diagnosis, and in celebrating every individual’s abilities, personality, and life story.
Together, we are more than a team, we are a community.
